How to Save Tips: Cards

I’m not a financial expert but I would like to share some tips that I’m doing to save some money. Let me start with cards, I’m pretty sure that most of you have membership cards and credit cards and these cards are one way to save some money, how?

Phot source: bdo.com.ph

1. SM advantage card/BDO rewards card – SM is everywhere and I have to admit I always go here to do my grocery, shopping and paying bills so I applied for SM advantage card to earn points while shopping. When I open savings account in BDO, after several months they send me BDO rewards card which has more advantage, because I earn points while shopping and saving money. One more thing, I do not need to renew my membership.

1 point is equals to P1; I was able to buy things using my points like cards, Teflon pan, stainless trash bin, baron antenna, and others.

BDO Rewards or SM advantage card is not only for earning points but you can get freebies and discounts.  I got discount when we stayed in Taal Vista Hotel.

2. Mercury Drug Suki Card – I had my first “Suki Card” when I learned that I have psoriasis, so for sure I will always buy medicine so I applied for this card. The same with SM advantage and BDO rewards card, 1 point equals to P1. We used our points to buy chips, ice cream cup, or bottled drinks.

3. Plus Card – You can use this card in Abenson, Walter Mart, Avant Abenson and Electroworld. I haven’t tried redeeming points here, good thing that I created this post and this reminds me to use my points before 12/2012.

4. Mabuhay Miles – I’m not a frequent PAL flyer because I always avail seat sale from lowest cost carrier but I earn miles using my credit card points. We used our points when we went to CDO – Camiguin last 2010.

5. I’m also a member of Greencow and Dakki so just in case I need to buy their products, I can have it at a lower price.

6. Belle de Jour Lifestyle Card – I haven’t use this card yet but I will post it here once I use it.

I’m planning to avail “Laking National Card” because my son will goes to school this June, I will search for more info. Sometimes we avail Pizza Hut card.

7. Pfizer Sulit Card I do receive instant discount every time I buy Pfizer medicine. Click here to read more.

8. Wilcon Depot Loyalty Card – You can convert your reward points into peso value for future purchases.

Credit Cards

Some people dislike credit cards because it may lead them to temptation but for me I love having credit card, I used to have two credit cards but now I only use one card.

1. I only maintain one card so less temptation and less annual fee. But every year, I call my credit card company to waive my annual fee, which is always granted except last year, they only waive half of it. But still I was happy because I’ve read that some people weren’t able to waive their annual fee, not even half.

2. As much as possible I use my credit card because,

· I can earn points. Points that I can use to redeem products like our stand fan. I also use my points to earn miles.

· I can save some centavos, how? If you will notice whenever we buy stuff or pay meals, we don’t get exact change. For example, I ate in one restaurant and my bill is P689.11, I gave them P1000 and I only received P310, I lost the P0.89 centavos. I understand if the cashier gave me P310.75 but she didn’t. I know it is just centavos but if it will happen every time I eat and buy stuff, those centavos can add to my savings.

· Promo, I get free Starbucks beverage, free meals and Caltex gas rebate by just using my card.

· Discount – yes, sometimes I get discounts by using credit card. 2 years ago we bought gas range and the Service Staff informed us that if we will buy it using our card and avail the installment promo, we can get additional 2% discount.

· Earn some peso – I always take advantage installment plan, even I have the money or not because I can earn some peso. How? 3 years ago, I bought my laptop in installment basis, I have the money to pay the laptop in cash which I got from my SSS maternity benefit but I chose the installment plan. I deposited my maternity benefit in my savings account and I only withdraw the amount that I need for the installment every month, in that way, my money is still earning interest.

My personal tips and hope this helps. Free to share your personal tips and if you can suggest other membership cards that are not listed here.

Note: Do not use your credit card if you do not have the money to pay your due.

  6. Hi Mich! I agree, credit cards, in some ways can help us save money. I especially like it when shops offer 0% interest with installment options on goods. But at the same time, knowing your financial capacity and discipline in paying the credit card bills is REALLY necessary. I leave it up to my husband to hold our credit card because...sometimes...well only sometimes...temptation creeps up on me :)

  7. I have had SM advantage card since my college years but I didn't use it often. Its only recently that I learned the value of these loyalty cards. I learned how to budget my money for bulk grocery purchases too instead of dashing now and then to the sari-sari store for tingi tingi purchases.

Plus I love the freebies when you eat at partner restaurants :3

Credit cards are still scary for me. I'm a bit impulsive ^-^; so I just use my debit account. I can use only what I have.

  8. I don't have any of these cards yet but thank you for this post! Now I'm encouraged to have one and start saving big time.

I think Shakey's also have their own loyalty card wherein you get your second pizza for free... yey!

  9. I miss Ever Gotesco's card that's the only card I was able to use. They were generous with points before, now I don't have news anymore.

At SM I decided not to renew our Advantage after it expired on me. haha But now their offers are really tempting so I might reconsider. Plus you also get free Lifeline when you have advantage so that you can call for ambulance for free when you have emergency.

    1. i have no idea that ever has a loyalty card. =)

  10. I also have discount cards and they really help stretch the budget because we can use earned points. Here are the ones I have:
    *Mercury Drug Suki Card
    *Laking National Card
    *Fresh Card (Rustan's / Shopwise)
Sometimes we avail of a discount from either Pizza Hut or Shakey's

  12. Me too I only use one credit card now. I used to have several but I actually used just two at a time. It's hard to handle finances when you have to juggle all those cards hehehe. And I am not always an impulsive buyer so no worries even if I have my card with me while in the mall. Also a user of SM advantage card. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I personally do not have many of such cards around. I still believe it's best paying cash.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I only keep and use Royal Duty Free card and SM Advantage card.

    ReplyDelete
  15. These cards have their own means to lure their clientele by coming up with promos attached to the said cards you've mentioned.

However, we have compared the many groceries available in the metropolis and SM groceries have very high prices compared to the others. I did not mean to oppose you here, just sharing my thoughts :)

    1. i also notice that but i have no choice because we have limited groceries here in the province. =)

  16. i am only a supplementary card. so far so good, di naman kasi ako more on cc. it is also good kasi sometimes, it is use to pay online or pag wala talagang extra cash. we just have to be disciplined on the usage.

    1. i agree, discipline is all we need.

  18. Kung ok ka sa pag-manage ng finances, ok talaga ang credit card. Yung points super sulit and the rewards. Halimbawa, yung mga bibilhin ko sa grocery, gagamitan ko ng card, pero pagdating na pagdating ko sa bahay, I will wire payment from may bank account to the card.

Kumabaga, I only use my card kapag may cash din talaga ako for it. Good entry Michi.

Oh, and yung tanong mo about code with pinterest, I don't remember where I got it na e. Nag-google lang ako ng "social icons pinterest"

  21. Sis, really agree with SM Advantage card. You can earn points in several ways plus you can convert it to GC or buy brownies at SM!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nakakatulong yung Suki Card ng Mercury. Pag malaki points ko, naibabawas sa bibilhin ko na mahal na gamot.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thank you for sharing this. My mom I think I have card for Mercury.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have Delta skymiles and how I wish my mileage is 120,000 so I can have a free round-trip tiicket but unfortunately I only have 96,0000 :-( but I do like to collect miles and points

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nice tips here. I am also fond of cards but I don't have that many cards with me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nice saving up tips, ha. I used to underestimate the power of the SM Advantage card. Well, time to use up those coupons now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for sharing this. I only have the SM Prestige card, and I use the points that I earned from it in buying things for my kids.

  28. Credit Cards are really tempting especially when you visit a mall when it is sale. The hard part of the credit cards is when paying. But if you can control and manage your expenses credit cards are not bad, what is bad is your attitude towards spending.

Discount cards are sure of help also in cutting off with the expenses. We have the Suki card, discount cards in officewarehouse, expression and national bookstore. Classes will start soon so discount cards are of great help.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Those rewards cards are really helpful. I cancelled all my credit cards because no matter how I control my spending, it just so very easy to swipe.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have 3 credit cards right now but planning to close the other two. Tama ka, mahirap yung madaming temptations.hehehe.
One is to concentrate the points into just one account. Mahirap kapag madami kang cards na gamit kasi nahahati ung mga points na supposed to be dapat sa isa na lang, mas mabilis pang umakyat ang points mo.
I also have the Plus card, I already redeemed some points there. I even managed to buy 5-kilo rice during emergency and I had no money in my pocket. naiwan ko.
I also have suki card (mercury), i redeemed some snacks there using my points.
SM Advantage, madami na akong naredeem dito, snacks, t-shirts, toys for my son, pati ung renewal ng card minsan galing dito.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. good for you! sarap din magredeem ng points. =)

  31. I never thought of credit cards as temptation. Siguro depende din yun sa pag manage sa finances mo. When I was single, I had 3 credit cards and i made it a point to pay the bill on time or else, i'm making the credit card company rich. :P di ako pala kape pero na enjoy ko ang free starbucks ng HSBC :D

    1. sis, love ko talaga ang free starbucks kahit di ako mahilig sa kape din.

  34. Pasok sa banga ang post na 'to! My parents have a Mercury Drug Suki Card. My mom and I both have SM Advantage cards at ang dami ko nang nabili just with the points I've earned. I have one that's also linked to my BDO savings account but I lost the card and not sure if the one SM Advantage sent me is the one that is linked. Credit Card is something I'm avoiding now. I used to manage it really well, but not right now. Ugh!

  47. I use discount cards and loyalty cards as well. Shopwise gives you a 100-peso rebate for every 10K worth of accumulated purchases, Citibank Cash Back Card also gives 5% rebates on groceries, and rebates also for other purchases so we do save hundreds every month using it for our purchases. We do make sure though that we pay the entire amount due each month. If not, we'd end up with more expenses than savings.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I do have SM card and Laking National Card. But I was not able to use the points I earned from these cards.

I use coupon or discount cards to save. Before I go to my fave craft shop I always check their site if there's a printable coupons. It's a big help.

  53. Good tips. I agree that it's quite useful to have those cards e.g. SM Advantage Card, Mercury Drug Suki Card. Credit cards are, on the other hand, just tempting to use again and again so I'd rather not have one... again.
